Hyderabad 10K Run

It was Sunday morning 5:30, when Mahalife volunteers were all charged up to RUN. This time it was to take up the cause of children with special needs, in association with the ‘Andhra Pradesh Association for the Welfare of the Mentally Retarded’ (APAWMR.ORG)

Few days leading up to the Hyderabad 10K Run, 25 Mahalife volunteers went ahead and had the registration done for the special children as well. Among the two children who joined us for the run, 19-year-old Yogesh suffers with a brain disorder, and is frequently subjected to fits. But on this day, he was there; ready to walk with us though he was barely able stand. It was a joy to see the 11 year old Monica, who joined us with a big smile. Monica suffers with autism, a disorder of neural development that is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.
As Mahalife volunteers wheeled these children on the Hyderabad 10K run track, several of them including the media guys came to meet the children and take a picture of them. Among them was Prathima, who works with F-secure in the city. She went a step ahead to actually join us in wheeling the kids for some distance. She had questions like… how many kids do you come across with special needs like these? Doesn’t the Government do anything for them? She was startled to know that a city hospital receives at least, five new cases each day. APAWMR reports that 2.8% children in Andhra Pradesh are born with special needs.

Mahalife desires to get involved in activities like these, which restate and redeem the value for human life, and attempts to accept people with special needs into the main stream of society.
