What can Valentine's day do?
Valentines’ day is round the corner and I’m sure that all you love seekers in the cities are going to be more cautious about your movements in view of the recent issues that have developed particularly in Mangalore, Karnataka.
There are strong and yet inhuman reactions by both the younger generation and the proponents of Sri Ram Sena activists on behalf of Mr. Pramod Muthalik. The concern of the activists has not been clearly expressed to the society. What is it that the activist group is actually against? Is it about westernization caused due to pub culture or girls wearing jeans and T-shirts? Is it about immorality caused because of obscene clothing and night parties? Or is it against the rise of the new culture of finding love in the context of Valentine’s day? Or is it against the loss of Indian culture because girls do not wear sari’s anymore? On one side the Ram Sena attempts to safeguard the culture and resists change, and on the other, the modern generation is the pilot for the changing culture?
Young voices are crying, “why is the society tolerant when men wear shirt-pant, instead of a dhoti?,” “Why is the government giving licenses to the pubs but not educating the society to be responsible?,” “what does empowering women imply?,” “How has our culture answered the question – ‘Do you find love and get married or get married and then figure out what love is?’” and “what is inherently wrong with Valentine’s day?”
Indian culture as a whole is in constant change which is evident more in the cities. Women empowerment is spelt out in freedom for women in finding vocations for work resulting in impacting the Indian culture. In an effort to make their life comfortable the ‘jeans–tees’ clothing has evolved into a regular pattern of dressing. Though, most responsible women have maintained a healthy balance, there are ethical implications that affect the fabric of Indian culture. We do not want to and cannot resist changing culture. But, we need to engage in clearly and responsibly handle the changes together. How can we do this? Encourage you to give your suggestions.
